Everyone has had the experience of being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, feeling frustrated, and wondering what in the world is going on up there. Is it a car or truck accident? Is there a hunt for a fugitive? Is it road construction?
Luckily, there is a resource that you can use to anticipate at least some delays on the road. Few Michigan residents know that the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has a webpage where you can search for construction closures and projects in your county. Knowing about closures can help you plan alternate routes. The MDOT website sometimes even provides you with detours. And if you still have to take roads undergoing construction, then you can ride prepared — bring an audiobook or settle in for the wait with your favorite tunes.
There will be multiple lane closures on the M1 that affect northbound and southbound M-1 (Woodward Avenue) between Kirby Street and Euclid Street (6 blocks north of Grand Blvd), Alexandrine Street to Kirby Street, from Adams Street to Alexandrine Street. The closures will continue until June 29, 2016.
There will be multiple lane closures eastbound M-8 (Davison Ave) from Linwood Avenue to Rosa Parks Boulevard
The center turn lane and the inside lane on eastbound M-8 to close for utility work. The closures will continue until June 24, 2016.
The Trumbull Avenue bridge over I-94 will be completely closed for bridge replacement. The closure will continue until October 15, 2016.
Take this detour: if you are a pedestrian or typically go northbound on Trumbull, use westbound Warren to northbound Rosa Parks to eastbound Marquette to northbound Trumbull. If you typically go southbound on Trumbull, use westbound Holden to westbound West Grand Boulevard to southbound 14th to eastbound Forest to southbound Trumbull.
Woodward Avenue between Campus Martius and Gratiot St. and State Street will be closed for reconstruction continuously through June 1, 2016.
MDOT offers a detour: If you typically travel northbound on Woodward, use eastbound Monroe Street from Campus Martius to northbound Randolph to northbound Broadway to northbound Witherell to westbound Adams to northbound Woodward. If you typically travel southbound on Woodward, use westbound State to southbound Griswold to eastbound Michigan to southbound Woodward.
Eastbound and westbound Grand Boulevard between M-1 (Woodward Ave) and John R Street will be closed continuously through May 31, 2016 to do road work. Although there will be local access to businesses, do expect delays.
Take this detour instead: If you usually drive westbound on Grand Boulevard, then you should use southbound John R to westbound Milwaukee to northbound Cass to westbound Grand Boulevard. If you usually drive eastbound on Grand Boulevard, then you should use southbound 3rd to eastbound Baltimore to northbound Brush to eastbound Grand Blvd.
