Plaintiff loses right leg due to a snowmobile defect in a product liability case

A New York man receives $2.7 million  in product liability case after a Yamaha snowmobile causes him to lose a leg.

Plaintiff Dennis Mohr, 55, was snowmobiling at a friend's property in upstate New York. His snowmobile had a broken shock absorber so he had to borrow his friend's 1995 Yamaha VX600V-R model from friend.

Mohr found fouled spark plugs on the Yamaha and tried to clear them. The snowmobile's owner stood at the throttle and revved the engine at a high speed, while Mohr another friend lifted up the snowmobile's back. As they raised the snowmobile, its track broke off and flew into Mohr's leg. Mohr immediately underwent an above-the-knee amputation of his right leg as a result of the accident.

Mohr sued Yamaha motor Co. for product liability for inadequate warning and design defect.

Mohr had to quit his job and started receiving Social Security disability benefits. He has to take morphine every day because he experiences pain in his leg. Mohr also claimed that he could not conduct his usual daily activities.

The jury awarded Mohr a total of $2.5 million over the course of two trials for past/future medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
